RHAPSODIES IN BLACK: ART OF THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE
Rhapsodies in Black
- an exhibit on the Harlem Renaissance

LACMA is pleased
to offer this important American art to the people of Los Angeles."
Hi everyone,
I wanted to send out an e-mail to as many people as possible, encouraging
you all to see the above referenced art exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery
of Art in Washington, D.C. Although I plan to visit the exhibit this weekend,
others who have seen it have had nothing but absolutely wonderful things
to
say about the exhibit.
I do know that the exhibit "expands and explores the parameters through which the Harlem Renaissance has been traditionally understood." Additionally, "the exhibition presents the Harlem Renaissance as an international dialogue that crosses intellectual, political, and cultural boundaries."
The exhibit will feature such artists as: Jacob Lawrence, William H. Johnson, Archibald J. Motley, Jr., James VanDerZee, Aaron Douglas, and Lois Mailou Jones etc.
The exhibit has been at the Corcoran since May and will on display until
Sunday, June 22, 1998 so I encourage all of you to share in this rich cultural
experience. All too often, we procrastinate and never take time out to
acknowledge and appreciate the contributions that African Americans
have made to in the art world, and I must speak for myself in saying
that no matter whether it is a black art exhibit, a black written and produced
play, or a musical (except for "beauty shop" and the like - which I have
no interest in seeing) it is all too often the case that the venue is swarming
with every other race except ours. If we don't see the significance
and importance in supporting our cultural past, who will be there to teach
and nourish our posterity?
