BLACK CANADIAN CHURCH FIRE

On April 16, 1998, the British Methodist Episcopal Church located at 460 Shaw Street in Toronto was destroyed by arson. [telphone: (416) 534-3831]

The BME emerged from the African M.E. Church in 1856. This church was founded by freedom seekers who came to Canada on the Underground Railroad and has survived through the years with the support of each new wave of African migration to this area.

This fire has devastated the Black, the Christian and the broader community since the BME has touched all of our lives in some way - spiritually, culturally and socially.
