INTERFAITH PILGRIMAGE OF THE MIDDLE PASSAGE
Washington, DC Events--July 13-16, 1998
http://www.InterChange.org/Middle_Passage/
The Interfaith Pilgrimage of the Middle Passage will hold events at national institutions which created slavery and its legacy. We will offer prayers and a new vision for operating in liberating ways in the new millennium. All of these events are meant to highlight the relationship between the centuries-old Trans-Atlantic slave trade, and the conditions of the U.S. and the world today.
July 13: DAY OF WELCOME
3 p.m.: Welcoming ceremony, Lincoln Park, East Capitol St. between 11th and 13th Streets, featuring area performing artists and community leaders
July 14: DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
We will visit the National Mall because this was one of the largest
slave auction sites in the United States
10 a.m.: Procession of Remebrance and Atonement--National Mall, assembling at 4th St. and Madison Dr. NW, across from the National Gallery of Art
7pm-Sunset: Waterside Ancestral Ceremony--Hains Point, East Potomac Park (follow the signs to the ceremonial site)
July 15: JUBILEE 2000--IN SUPPORT OF DEBT FORGIVENESS
We celebrate Jubilee 2000 on July 15. Because we do not wish
to foster international generational poverty, we are joining with many
international voices to call for cancellation of debt of African nations.
This debt debilitates these First World nations and threatens to keep them
in economic slavery.
10 a.m.: Vigil at the World Bank and IMF Edward Murrow Park, H St. NW between 18th and 19th Streets
7 p.m.Gospel Requiem:A Spoken Word and Musical Performance-Shiloh Baptist Church, 1500 9th St. NW
July 16: A CELEBRATION OF DISARMAMENT
We will follow the example of our youth gangs who have called
truces and laid down their arms across the United States. We pray that
it will no longer be necessary to trade in instruments of destruction.
10 a.m.: Memorial Walk through Arlington National Cemetery to visit Old Slave Quarters and various important gravesites--Assemble at Memorial Dr. entrance to cemetery (near Metro)
3 p.m.: Vigil at the Pentagon: South Parking Lot, the Pentagon
