Position: Resource Development Director
Here's an opportunity to join the Los Angeles Times Editorial
Library's management team at an exciting juncture. We have a number of
major initiatives and projects in process and on the drawing boards and
are looking for an experienced manager to help with design and implementation.
The
Los Angeles Times has an opening for the library's director for resource
development.
The resource development director, along with the archiving
and user services directors, are responsible for overseeing sections of
the library and also help the editorial library director run the overall
operation.
The library has earned a reputation as an innovative and
responsive leader in its field. It manages the departmental Intranet, creates
custom databases to support ongoing investigative projects, and conducts
a variety of instructional courses for journalists. The library works closely
with the company's marketing and new media departments with a clear understanding
that archives must meet the information needs of the newsroom while responding
to market and business needs.
This position oversees the four specialists responsible
for implementing programs in desktop integration, database creation, training
and product development.
Responsibilities:

Consults with the library director and directors for archiving
and user services to identify projects and set priorities in support of
resource development for the Library involving intranet services, desktop
-
integration, database creation, training, automated indexing
and thesaurus control, and product analysis and development.

Responsible in conjunction with the four Specialists (Training,
Desktop Integration, Database Architect, and Product Analysis and Development)
for naming, convening, setting objectives and directing the work of the
four respective cross-functional teams (Training, Intranet, Systems Support
and Innovation).

Supervises the four specialists in developing project plans,
establishing deadlines and designing, testing and implementing initiatives.

Supervises the Systems Administration staff and sets their
priorities for both support and maintenance of library systems and support
for development of resource development projects.

Responsible for staying abreast of new technologies and systems
which might be of interest to the Library and communicating information
about these to Library management.

Investigates technical solutions for library initiatives
and projects and recommends preferred options.
Qualifications and requirements: Candidates should have a
Masters of Library Science; background and experience in library systems
for archiving digital content, indexing and describing data for electronic
retrieval, search retrieval technologies, intranet design
and database creation. They should also have knowledge of user behavior
and experience training in use of library systems. Other requirements are
project management and supervisory experience; the ability to communicate
effectively orally and in writing; strong interpersonal skills and the
ability to work with others in a team setting.
